The Best Vegan Bakeries in America
Doughnuts in Brooklyn that made vegan baking mainstream, cinnamon rolls in Chicago, sourdough in Baltimore — where to get your pastry, city by city.
The doughnut capital
Dun-Well Doughnuts has been frying vegan doughnuts in East Williamsburg since 2011, and the rotating flavors still sell out before noon — the maple bacon and the Boston cream are the ones regulars race. Cinnaholic took the other route and franchised it: a fully vegan cinnamon-roll shop where the frosting and topping combinations run into the dozens, with shops from Tucson to Chicago.
Cake, done properly
City Cakes in Salt Lake City does thick-cut slices and full cakes that convert skeptics one chocolate slab at a time. Jennifer Lee's Gourmet Bakery in Worcester, Massachusetts built its reputation on allergy-friendly vegan boxed cakes that travel — the kind people mail for birthdays. And L'Artisane in Coral Gables brings French patisserie technique to fully plant-based eclairs and tarts, which is rarer than it should be.
Bread and the morning line
Motzi Bread in Baltimore sourdough-ferments its way through a weekly rotation; the loaves sell out because there are only so many a small bakery can bake. Minglewood Bakeshop in Richmond does the same for biscuits and morning pastries. In Milwaukee, Blooming Lotus Bakery covers both ends — breads and sweets — and HoochMKE ferments everything it can get away with.
The neighborhood gems
Nami in Phoenix is the fully vegan bakery locals bring out-of-towners to; P.S. and Co in Philadelphia pairs its baked goods with a café menu that makes it a full stop; Mud Pie Bakery & Coffee in Merriam, Kansas does the small-town vegan bakery thing so well it feels like a proof of concept; and Planty Sweet in Albuquerque keeps the Southwest supplied. The pattern across all of them: vegan baking stopped being a compromise somewhere around 2015, and these are the shops that proved it.
