Vegan Oakland: Where to Eat Plant-Based

Dinner on College Avenue, vegan comfort food on Broadway, a Telegraph Avenue bakery and four Ethiopian restaurants with vegan menus.

Ethiopian at the center

Oakland has a small set of fully vegan restaurants, and four Ethiopian restaurants with vegan dishes are the other anchor. Add ramen, tacos, falafel and bakeries, and College Avenue and Telegraph Avenue make natural routes through the city.

Fully vegan

Millennium on College Avenue is a fully vegan restaurant with a dinner menu that includes Georgian Spiced Olives, Corn Riblets, Buffalo Cauliflower, a Little Gem Salad and the Millennium Burger. Souley Vegan on Broadway is fully vegan, with Deez Ain't Gator Bites, Nacho Bizness, Buffalo Strips and Sausage over Buttered Grits.

Shangri-La Vegan on Telegraph Avenue serves a Full Meal, a Moderate Meal or a Simple Meal, followed by pies such as the Key Lime Pie and the Coconut Milk Pie.

Ethiopian, with vegan dishes

Blue Nile on 14th Street has a Vegan Combo, a Vegan Shiro Combo and a Vegan Mushroom Combo. Cafe Colucci on San Pablo Avenue offers a Vegan Combo, Gomen, Kik Alicha and Mitten Shiro, and Cafe Romanat on Santa Clara Avenue serves Misir Wot, Kik Alicha, Gomen and Mushroom Tibs. Enssaro on College Avenue has a Vegan Delight and shiro dishes that can be made vegan.

Telegraph Avenue and College Avenue

Forma Bakery on Telegraph Avenue sells a Plant Based Croissant, a Plant Based Chocolate Croissant and a Passionfruit Earl Grey Morning Bun. Taqueria La Venganza, further out on Telegraph, serves a Mushroom Barbacoa Taco, a Mushroom Al Pastor Taco and a Mushroom Carnitas Taco. On College Avenue, Ramen Shop has a Veggie Ramen that can be made vegan.

Pizza, mac and falafel

Dimond Slice Pizza on MacArthur Boulevard sells a vegan slice and a pizza of the day, and is closed Mondays in the hours we have listed. Homeroom on 40th Street serves a Vegan Mac, a Buffalo Vegan Mac and a gluten-free vegan brownie. Shawarmaji on Franklin Street has a Falafel Sandwich, a Falafel Pita and falafel by the piece, and Little Moon Bakehouse on 14th Street offers a Black Sesame Mooncake and a Taiwanese Pineapple Cake.

Where a restaurant isn't fully vegan, the dishes we name are ones its menu marks vegan or vegan on request, so confirm with staff when you order. Menus and hours change, so check before you go. Know a spot we're missing? Suggest it.
