Vegan Seattle: A Neighborhood Guide
A plant-based bar with a wall of vinyl on Capitol Hill, vegan sushi in Queen Anne, doughnuts on Market Street — where to eat plant-based in Seattle, one neighborhood at a time.
Capitol Hill and the Central District
On Pike Street, Life on Mars is a bar where all the food is plant-based: the LOM Classic Burger, beer-battered cauliflower wings and a matcha cheesecake, eaten in front of a wall of vinyl records. A block east, Cinnaholic Capitol Hill is the vegan cinnamon-roll chain's Capitol Hill shop. Over on 12th Avenue, Plantiful Superfoods runs a fully plant-based menu of açaí bowls, a Burger Banh Mi and an umami mushroom pizza, and Frankie & Jo's Capitol Hill on East Union scoops the plant-based ice cream its owner has called vegan and gluten-free.
Further east in the Central District, Adey Abeba isn't all-vegan (the menu has meat dishes), but its vegetarian combo brings split pea and lentil sauces, cabbage and collard greens. The family-owned restaurant opened in 2005.
Downtown, Pioneer Square and the International District
Near Pike Place Market, El Borracho is a bar and Mexican kitchen that went fully plant-based in 2021, with seitan barbacoa bowls and jackfruit and soyrizo tacos. In Pioneer Square, Rojo's Mexican Food makes "authentic Mexican flavor, made plant-based": burritos, tacos and quesadillas, with fillings like al pastor soy curls and jackfruit carnitas.
In Little Saigon, ChuMinh Tofu & Vegan Deli pairs an all-you-can-eat vegan buffet with plant-based banh mi like the spicy lemongrass "chicken" and the barbecue "pork".
South Lake Union and Queen Anne
Two vegan kitchens sit a few blocks apart in South Lake Union. Kati Vegan Thai cooks modern, plant-based Thai food like garlic fried jackfruit on sticky rice and pumpkin curry with tofu. Ba Bar Green, a takeout window on Terry Avenue, is the entirely vegan offshoot of the Ba Bar restaurant next door (which is not), cooking East and Southeast Asian flavors. Up the hill, Sushi Samurai is proudly 100% plant-based, with konjac "shrimp" tempura and rolls like the Red Dragon.
Ballard, Fremont, Wallingford and the U District
In Ballard, Dough Joy on Market Street makes doughnuts with no eggs or dairy — cinnamon roll, lemon bar, mango Tajín — and Yaygit Vegan Cafe, in a courtyard on 22nd Avenue, makes organic cold-pressed juices, smoothies, salads and sandwiches. Frankie & Jo's Ballard scoops the same plant-based ice cream as its Capitol Hill sibling.
In Fremont, Vital Creations Vegan Bistro does bowls, burgers, brunch and shakes, like the Good Vibrations poke bowl and the Fremont Philly. Harvest Beat in Wallingford serves 100% vegan, seasonal five-course dinners at set seatings, dine-in only, so book ahead. Mighty-O Donuts has been mixing its own doughnut recipes in Seattle since 2000, from organic, plant-based ingredients; its Green Lake shop is on North 55th Street. Pizza Pi Vegan Pizzeria in the U District bakes pies like the E.M.P. (plants, pesto, potatoes), and Frankie & Jo's University Village rounds out the dessert run. Back in Wallingford, 45th Vegetarian Thai isn't all-vegan (a few dishes come with egg), but it will modify any dish on request.
South Seattle and West Seattle
In Othello, Cafe Red serves a breakfast "fueled by plants" — breakfast burritos, avocado hash browns, mac 'n' cheez — and a few blocks north on MLK, Chu Minh Sandwiches & Coffee makes spicy tofu sandwiches and jackfruit salad. Georgetown Liquor Company reopened as an all-vegan bar and restaurant on Airport Way. Over in West Seattle, Box Bar keeps all its food and cocktails 100% plant-based, from tofu curry ramen to a portobello French dip; it's 21+.
