Vegan San Diego: Where to Eat Plant-Based

Pizza and mac and cheese at Donna Jean, burgers and fysh tacos at Evolution, vegan Thai and Lao menus and sushi on Convoy Street.

Comfort food first, then Southeast Asia

Comfort food is San Diego's strength among all-vegan kitchens: burgers, pizza, mac and cheese, fried chick'n. The city also has a second strand: vegan Thai, Lao and Vietnamese menus along University Avenue and beyond.

Fully vegan kitchens

Donna Jean has a menu of hot shrooms, meatballs, a Caesar salad, a Cast Iron Mac & Cheese, lasagna and named pizzas that include the #1 Crush Pizza and the Four Horsemen Pizza. In the hours we have listed it is closed on Tuesdays.

Veganic Thai on University Avenue is fully vegan Thai with takeout and outdoor seating. The Yasai, on Convoy Street, is a fully vegan Japanese and sushi restaurant, and Sipz Fusion Cafe is fully vegan as well. Loving Hut has two San Diego listings, one on El Cajon Boulevard and one on Mira Mesa Boulevard.

Burgers and fast food

Evolution Fast Food is all vegan, with an Evo Burger, Bacon & Cheez Burger, Mushroom Swiss Burger, Fuego Burger, a Buffalo Chick'n Sandwich and a BLTA, plus Coconut Fysh Tacos. Plant Power has two San Diego listings, one on Hardy Avenue, and a breakfast menu that includes an OG Breakfast Burrito and a Chicken and Waffle, along with burgers like the Big Zac.

Mr. Charlie's and Native Foods are listed as fully vegan too. Mr. Charlie's menu includes the Not a Hamburger and Not Chicken Nuggets.

Thai, Lao and Vietnamese with vegan menus

So Saap on University Avenue is a Lao restaurant with a run of vegan dishes: tom yum and tom kha soups, papaya salad, laab and nam tok beef. Goi Cuon on Robinson Avenue serves Fried Vegan Eggrolls, a Pho Vegan and a Crispy Tofu & Vegan Egg Roll Vermicelli Bowl, and California Thai Cafe on Black Mountain Road has Pad Thai, Pad See Ew and Drunken Noodles.

Italian, Mediterranean and international

Pazza Market & Cucina on La Jolla Village Drive has a vegan section that runs from the Vegan Margherita Pizza to Vegan Pappardelle al Funghi and Vegan Spaghetti Pomodoro. Pita 22 on Highlands Village Place sells a Falafel Pita, a Portobello Shawarma Pita and a Fired Up Sabih Bowl.

Jyoti-Bihanga on Adams Avenue is an International restaurant with a vegan menu that includes Never Say No Nachos and a Portobello Quesadilla.

Where a restaurant isn't fully vegan, the dishes we name are ones its menu marks vegan or vegan on request, so confirm with staff when you order. Menus and hours change, so check before you go. Know a spot we're missing? Suggest it.
