Vegan Thanksgiving Desserts: All-Vegan Bakeries to Order From

Skip the dairy-free pie gamble. These 100% vegan bakeries, from Portland to Miami, bake without butter, eggs or milk, so whatever you bring to the table is safe for everyone to share.

Why order from an all-vegan bakery

Most bakeries can tell you a pie crust is dairy-free. Fewer can promise there's no butter in the crumb topping, no egg wash on the lattice and no milk in the filling. At a fully vegan bakery the question never comes up, because the whole menu is plant-based. Every shop below is listed as 100% vegan in our directory.

Small bakeries sell out around the holidays. Check each shop's website or call in early November to ask whether it takes Thanksgiving preorders, what sizes it offers and when pickup is. Every name below links to its listing, with the address and phone number we have.

The West and Southwest

In Portland, Sweetpea on Southeast Stark Street is a fully vegan bakery. Salt Lake City has City Cakes on 300 West, known for thick slices and whole cakes, and in Denver, The Cake Bar on East 13th Avenue is all-vegan.

In Texas, Zucchini Kill Bakery in Austin's North Loop bakes vegan and gluten-free, and Unicorniverse Bakery & Cafe is just up I-35 in Round Rock.

The Midwest

Chicago's Pie, Pie My Darling on West Chicago Avenue bakes 100% vegan cakes and cupcakes, with walk-in hours on Fridays and Saturdays only, so order ahead. Downstate, Riley's Vegan Sweets and Eats is in Peoria.

Milwaukee has two Blooming Lotus Bakery shops, one on East North Avenue and one in Shorewood, plus HoochMKE in Bay View. In the Kansas City area, Mud Pie Bakery & Coffee on Johnson Drive is a fully vegan bakery and coffee shop.

The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic

In New York, Sixteen Mill Bakeshop on Union Street is fully vegan, and up the Hudson, Peaceful Provisions on Main Street in Beacon makes vegan doughnuts. Near Rochester, Hollycake House Café & Bakery is in East Rochester. In Massachusetts, Jennifer Lee's Gourmet Bakery in Worcester has built its reputation on vegan, allergy-friendly cakes.

Philadelphia has the deepest bench: Crust Vegan Bakery on Ridge Avenue in East Falls, Batter and Crumbs on Reed Street and P.S. and Co on Locust Street are all fully vegan. An hour north, Vegan Treats in Bethlehem is a fully vegan bakery, and in Pittsburgh, Allegro Bakery on Murray Avenue is too. Baltimore has Harmony Bakery and Motzi Bread, and in Virginia, The Difference Baker is in Ashburn and Minglewood Bakeshop is on West Cary Street in Richmond.

The South

In Atlanta, Flour + Time Bakery on Huff Road bakes croissants, biscuits and cinnamon rolls, all vegan. Around the metro, Tropicups Vegan Bakery is in Marietta, and Lizzie The Baker in Woodstock works by appointment, which suits a custom holiday order.

In North Carolina, Plant Cakes Bake Shop is in Wake Forest, and in Tennessee, Frannie's Vegan Cafe in Johnson City bakes cakes. Florida has Sweet Theory on King Street in Jacksonville, Valhalla Bakery near Orlando, L'Artisane for French-style pastry in Coral Gables, and Under the Mango Tree in Miami.

No vegan bakery nearby?

Ask the fully vegan restaurants in your area. Some sell whole cakes or pies around the holidays even when it isn't on the regular menu. If you're baking yourself, a good vegan pie crust uses a solid plant-based butter or coconut oil, and a pumpkin filling sets fine with cornstarch and plant milk in place of eggs and evaporated milk.

And if you know an all-vegan bakery that isn't on this list, tell us. We'll check it and add it to the map.
