Vegan San Francisco: Where to Eat Plant-Based

Two all-vegan Japanese kitchens in the Mission, burgers on Rhode Island Street and vegan menus at Burmese, Nepalese and Indian restaurants across the city.

A city of vegan-friendly menus

San Francisco's fully vegan restaurants are a short list, and the longer story is how many kitchens that aren't vegan have a real vegan section: Burmese, Nepalese, Indian, Filipino, Southern and Mediterranean all show up below. Plan around a few all-vegan anchors, then fill in the rest with places whose menus mark what's vegan.

The Mission: sushi and Japanese

Shizen Vegan Sushi Bar on 14th Street in the Mission District is a fully vegan sushi bar, with miso soup, gyoza and shishito alongside tempura vegetables and rolls. Cha-Ya on Valencia Street is a second all-vegan Japanese kitchen in the Mission, serving gyoza pot stickers, agedashi tofu and a Full Moon Sushi Plate. In the hours we have listed, it is closed on Tuesdays.

Valencia Street keeps going from there. Señor Sisig has a Vegano Sisig Taco and a Vegano California Sisig Burrito, Taqueria La Cumbre sells vegan burritos in petite, regular, deluxe and super sizes, and Dancing Yak serves a vegan momo next to Nepalese tofu dishes like the Shapta Tofu and Chowmein Tofu.

All-vegan kitchens across town

Golden Era Vegan Restaurant has an all-vegan menu of Vietnamese and Chinese-style dishes: Bánh Mì Sàigon, Golden Rolls, Mushu Rolls, Vegetable Fu Young and pot stickers. Rad Radish on Hayes Street cooks all day, from chilaquiles and avocado toast to chili crisp cauliflower, green falafel and a mezze salad.

Enjoy Vegetarian Restaurant on Kirkham Street is fully vegan Chinese, and Loving Hut on Irving Street is fully vegan with an international menu. For a late night, Phonobar & Om Sabor on Grove Street is a fully vegan spot with outdoor seating that opens evenings only, closes Mondays and runs past midnight Thursday to Saturday.

Burgers and sandwiches

Next Level Burger on Rhode Island Street is fully vegan, with a Classic Burger, American Chzburger, Fire Chzburger and a Maverick Burger on the menu. Mr. Charlie's TMS on Sutter Street is fully vegan too, serving the Not a Hamburger and Not Chicken Nuggets.

Ike's Love and Sandwiches on Polk Street has a long run of vegan sandwiches, including the Vegan Meatless Mike and the Vegan Gramps. Brenda's Meat & Three on Divisadero Street offers a Vegan 'Que Po' Boy and vegan collard greens, and Duboce Park Cafe has a Vegan Wrap and a Vegan Banh Mi.

Vegan sections worth a detour

Burma Love at Mint Plaza has a Homemade Yellow Bean Tofu, wok-tossed broccoli and eggplant curry, and Chaat Diner on Folsom Street offers Soya Fish Pakora, Chili Tofu and Saag Tofu. Kasa on Polk Street cooks Channa Masala and Gobi Aloo, and La Méditerranée on Noe Street serves hummus, baba ganoush and a Vegan Middle Eastern Plate.

Greens Restaurant on Marina Boulevard has dishes that can be made vegan, including the Mesquite Grilled Tofu Brochettes. Wildseed on Union Street serves crispy brussels sprouts, a Kale Caesar Salad and a mezze plate.

Where a restaurant isn't fully vegan, the dishes we name are ones its menu marks vegan or vegan on request, so confirm with staff when you order. Menus and hours change, so check before you go. Know a spot we're missing? Suggest it.
